Items 1 and 2 are from Arun Mehta
- A souped-up bar-code reader. Comes with a book, containing pictures with a bar code alongside. The farmer scans in a series of words/phrases, e.g. "send daughter with lunch to well", then points the laser in the bar code reader at a receiver at the top of the water tower in the village, upto a km away, and hits a button. At the village, there is one central PC, that receives and decodes the text, then uses text to speech to convert the text to voice, which it broadcasts via a small FM transmitter to the whole village, including the farmer himself. So, if his wife wants to say, "too late -- daughter and lunch already at banyan tree", she can scan that into such a device too, step outside, point and hit the button.
- The same thing, only with a mike as well: this one does voice mail too!
