DJURSLANDS.NET

Work Camp Contribution from Djurslands.net (From Sunday the 5.th of September at 4 p.m. until Friday the 10.th at 4 p.m. Centred around The Noerre Djurs Hallen)

Depending on the number of participants and their different actual interest, Djurslands.net will be able to contribute with teachers and trainers for all kind of relevant courses, workshops and sub-workshops during the work camp. But as we as hosts must be prepared, that our guest might want to study our interesting project, we nevertheless plan and prepare for the following two alternative main lines of study, based on experience from building Djurslands.net, A) as an organisation B) as a network:

A) COURSE on Djurslands.net - Work Camp Group A: Learning »community network« by exploring Djurslands.net for inspiration

or

B) WORKSHOP on Djurslands.net - Work Camp Group B: Learning »wireless network« by exploring and enhancing Djurslands.net

By experience we know that a pre made detailed schedule of each of these alternative main lines of study will not be kept in real life. So the detailed schedule will be made on a day to day basis in dialog with the participants as the camp develops. But here you can get a pretty good idea of what is meant to happen on the course and on the workshop:

A) COURSE: Learning »community network« by exploring Djurslands.net for inspiration

The goal is: To give the opportunity during the work camp to get insight into the building and workings of a net community in rural areas, based on volunteers.

Those who (on the international work camp right after the convention weekend) attend the group: "Learning »community network« by exploring Djurslands.net for inspiration" will learn about the extreme importance of the coordinated effort, on all the following four areas: ORGANIZATION, NET, WEB and SUPPORT, to make a successful community.

With: - More than 100 areas of covering

  • More than 1500 connected households
  • Many hundreds voluntaries with different responsibilities through out the network
  • A coordination center with a staff of 20 daily co-workers coordinating everything
  • A daily all encompassing "net-newspaper" for the people of Djursland
  • Free support-workshops for everybody at different locations
  • A central hotline for the users and a commercial branch for firms and institutions

Djurslands.net's has - as an organisation - lived through many experiences on all the mentioned areas, in its strive to bring about cheap broadband to all the rural areas of Djursland to make it possible for everybody to participate on equal terms in the more and more dominating IT-society.

LEARN THE KNOWHOW All these experiences are made available for the participants of this group and support are given to develop the participants own project plans. The group will meet with volunteers of the net and the daily crew of the coordination center.

"Organizing is really everything in generating the ability to build net communities in rural areas, - based on broadband radio networks covering the landscape".

FOCUS POINTS - TO GET THE BIG PICTURE:

I) ON LOCATION EXPERIENCE: Excursion - together with group B - around Djursland, to sense the extreme wide area of Djurslands.net, and to see some of the infrastructural installations and meet the people behind them. On our way we may see the cream of tourist attraction on Djursland.

II) ORGANIZATION: How to organize people around building their own IT-infrastructure as ones own contribution to the IT-society ? - The answers to this in rural areas unavoidable question might be most important, as building the network itself is not the first step. Development of realistic ideas, inspiriting organizing, the making of agreeable rules and the definition and coordination of practical responsibilities establishing partnerships, all together is the key to make the necessary areas of ORGANIZATION, NET, WEB and SUPPORT come true, as one whole self coordinating liveable social body - the community network.

III) NET: Obviously it is fundamental to inspire and organize local people with technical insight to form practical workgroups around studying the technical possibilities in the specific geographical area, and have them develop and agree to a master plan of building and supporting the best possible network, based on the ethics and rules of the community. They technicians should be made responsible for the practical building and running of each their own area, based on the coordinating master plan and generating of local workgroups around each of them.

IV) WEB: It is also very important to form groups who organize local people around:

a) using the network for general all encompassing information, as a service for building the local society in general

b) using the network - along with other medias - for inspiriting the local citizens to involve themselves in building their own part of a mutual broadband infrastructure of their area

c) using the network for all kind of additional services supporting all the people of the local society.

V) SUPPORT: The organization has to grow understanding of the importance of giving IT-support to all citizens in an well organized manner, as the citizens get more and more involved in the IT-society and get lots of trouble with IT-gear and its possibilities. It is crucial to form groups who know how to solve the problems and who know how to evolve and organize the practical ability to be able to take care and solve all the problems as they develop. Free ongoing hotline and a schedule for support-workshops for everyone in every area, are the basis of developing a good and successful local IT-society in rural areas.

B) WORKSHOP: Learning »wireless network« by exploring and enhancing Djurslands.net

The goal is: To give the opportunity during the work camp to get »hands on experience« in net building with different wireless techniques, supported by experienced guides.

Those who (on the international work camp right after the convention weekend) attend the group: "Learning »wireless network« by exploring and enhancing Djurslands.net" will learn to build »a first mile network« in practise, based on the experiences of Djurslands.net with common fibre connections to the Internet, the wireless standards a, b and g, and alternative and supplementary Internet connections through widespread local DSL-lines.

With more than 100 areas of covering and more than 1500 connected households, volunteers of Djurslands.net have together lived through many experiences with all the mentioned techniques, in their strive to bring about cheap quality broadband to all the rural areas of Djursland, to make it possible for everybody to participate on equal terms in the more and more dominating IT-society. All these experiences is made available for the participants of this group while solving different practical tasks, in relation to maintenance, expansion and improvement of areas of Djurslands.net. The group will work together with the voluntaries of the net and the daily crew of the coordination center.

"Practise is really everything in generating the ability to build broadband radio networks covering the landscape in rural areas".

FOCUS POINTS - TO GET THE BIG PICTURE:

I) ON LOCATION EXPERIENCE: Excursion - together with group A - around Djursland, to sense the extreme wide area of Djurslands.net, and to see some of the infrastructural installations and meet the people behind them. On our way we may see the cream of tourist attraction on Djursland.

II) WIRED BACKBONE: Visit at Djurslands.net's regional- and at one of the local fibre access points. We will also see local DSL access points, which secures double Internet access (dual-gateways) as close to the users as possible.

III) WIRELESS BACKBONE: Recently Djurslands.net expanded the bandwidth on several long (town to town) links with a factor of 5 to 10. This was done by upgrading the link equipment from b- and g-standard to a-standard. (It was done on the links between a1) the Voldby-silo and the Glesborg town hall mast, and a2) the Voldby-silo and the Veggerslev mast, and a3) the Voldby-silo and the Gjerrild mast). During the work camp this group will participate in upgrading the remaining wireless backbone of the northern Djursland building similar strong links between a4) the DLG-silo in Glesborg and the Glesborg town hall mast, a5) the DLG-silo and the Oerum-silo, a6) the DLG-silo and the Stenvad mast, and a7) the DLG-silo and the Boennerup mast, - and if time allows, a similar link - onwards - between a8) the Boennerup mast and the Fjellerup mast.

IV) WIRELESS INFRASTRUCTURE: Djurslands.net will share experiences of where it degrades and where it improves the network to upgrade b-standard to g-standard. This knowledge is put to use by training-tasks in upgrading and downgrading different places in the local infrastructure.

V) LOCAL WIRELESS ACCESS: Djurslands.net will share experiences of connecting households to the local infrastructure. This knowledge is put to use by training-tasks in helping the new users with the installation of their own connection.
