[WiFi Campus Network]?
- In order that the students of IIT Guwahati can act as a national resource to NGO's seeking to set up communications between villages, a testbed is proposed at IIT Guwahati, which will interconnect all the students hostels.
- On such a network, they can run their own radio and TV stations, share files, etc.
- Those with laptops can provide live global coverage for events...

Why?
- the hardware is cheap -- laser and photo diodes, CCDs, lenses,...
- the regulatory environment is terrific
- snooping is very hard
Mobile telephony apps for the text-challenged
Why?
- this category includes the blind, the illiterate, and those who hate reading off a tiny screen: a huge population waiting for the joys of SMS, etc to reach them
- the "killer app" on the phone, normal voice telephony, is a success story out of this category already. Why should it be the only one? Why not games that you could play without looking at the screen while driving a car, or attending a meeting?
Wireless communications for use in disasters
why?
- often, the first thing to collapse in a disaster is the telecom. In an earthquake, the roof may fall on a switch. A hurricane blows away masts. That compounds the disaster: people lack telecom just when they need it most, to request help, reassure family,...
- a host of wireless technologies can be adapted for use in disaster management: a functioning mobile phone might act as a radio locator, possibly even allow you to scream for help, a simple FM radio transceiver might do the trick too, and of course there is ham:
- the government and other bodies might be willing to fund such equipment, particularly if it is useful at normal times too...
[Wireless text communications]?
- very cheap hand held device (texting device)
- Equivalent to a very simple PDA.
- Has a very simple OS, able to wirelessly connect and be able to send text messages.
- Central server can log messages for users who come online.
- Within one campus. Why?
- Many uses .. cheap mobile connectivity - contributed by Archit Gupta
Development of smartcard(SIM card) for GSM phones for campus use.
- Many of us in the campus have GSM mobile phones. So we can make a simple smartcard and a local base which allows us to to communicate with each other inside the campus without subscribing to the mobile operator.
- This would virtually remove the cost of communication inside a small area and the whole campus can be made wireless.

Campus FM radio station with streaming
- A facility that would allow the students to broadcast to FM radios within the campus, and environs.
- Additionally, this could be streamed, so that alumni of the institute could stay in touch.
- Streamed content could be re- broadcast locally by any other community not wishing to run 24 hour programming of their own.
